Maisha Meds: Digital tool for medication procurement

Meds on Demand by Maisha Meds is a digital tool that provides patients with access to quality healthcare products by helping healthcare providers procure quality medications, manage sales and inventory, view prices, inventory levels, and delivery times. In addition, Meds on Demand functions as a digital medication reimbursement platform through which products can be subsidised.

The venture is based on the business model that pharmacies pay a small commission fee on placed orders and that collected data can be sold to regulators and pharma firms additionally.

Up until now, 11.5 million patients and more than 1.5000 pharmacies could be reached by Meds on Demand. The venture was able to secure more than 13,5 million € in funding, whereof the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation invested 9 million in 2022 and USAID invested 1.5 million in 2019.

In 2020, Maisha Meds expanded to Tanzania and Uganda, started a two-year pilot to improve antenatal care for pregnant women and an evaluation with UC Berkeley concerning Malaria. In 2022, the prosperous start-up successfully expanded to the Nigerian market, doubled its pharmacy network and and is now planning new initiatives in the areas of digital wallets, nutrition support for children and the treatment of non-malaria fevers.
